From reactive to strategic with online communication study

After more than 20 years working in television and broadcasting, Candace McNab knew communication inside out. What she didn’t have, she says, was the strategic framework behind it — until she started studying her Master of Strategic Communication online.

Candace McNab has spent more than 20 years working in television and broadcasting, and is now a project manager. She says the move into a new organisation highlighted the value of upskilling her strategic foundation to complement her vast experience.

“I decided to study my Masters of Strategic Communication because after 20 years of working in television, I realised I knew a lot about communication but not about strategy.”

Learning that’s immediately relevant

Candace says the course content has felt immediately applicable to her work.

“My favourite thing about the course so far has been how relevant it's been. I've worked in a communication field for over 20 years, and now everything that we're learning is information I wish I had 10 years ago.”

She says the relevance has been especially clear in her current role.

“So I've worked in television and broadcasting for the last 20 years and now I'm working for a larger organisation and every single thing that we have dealt with in the course so far I've either noticed in the field or can recognise I need to know more about.”

Taking learning straight back to work

Just weeks into study, Candace says she already wanted to share what she learnt with colleagues.

“After the first module, I wanted to run into my first management meeting and share the information I learnt with everybody."

Designed for busy lives

Studying online has enabled Candace to fit postgraduate study around work and life commitments.

“I love learning online. I fit my study in around being a mum, working full time, renovating my house and the myriad of other things that we have to do in everyday life!"

She also highlights flexibility from teaching staff.

“My [facilitator] has been really flexible with deadlines and that I can work ahead on some things and I can take a couple of days grace period if I need to if I have a really busy period at work. So it's been really flexible.”

More interactive than expected

Candace says online learning has been more engaging than she expected, including connecting with others in the course.

“It's been more interactive than I thought online,  and I have gotten to know the other students in my class even though we're kilometres away!"

Thinking ahead, not just reacting

She says the course is changing how she approaches strategic communication.

“The course has changed the way I think about strategic communications because before I was probably quite reactive and I might have known how to respond, but I didn't know how to plan ahead and what to prepare for.”

She’s also looking forward to the programme’s AI content.

“It's also got a module on AI, which I'm really excited to learn about. I know that my lecturer is very interested in that field, so I'm sure she's got lots of great knowledge that's really up to date.”

"Definitely worth it"

For others considering online study, Candace is clear in her recommendation.

“If you're thinking about studying, I would say it's definitely worth it.”
