Find academic support

Do you feel unprepared to write essays or want to learn more about referencing?

UC's Te Pokapū Pūkenga Ako | Academic Skills Centre (ASC) is a free advisory service and resource hub that focuses on writing and study strategies to maximise student achievement at all levels. You can find online resources on critical thinking and writing in the university context — everything from the correct use of semi-colons to creating a citations list, to subject-specific styles of discourse.

Tuihono UC also provides learning support via our tailored introduction to learning course, orientation sessions, and targeted resources for our learners - access these through the UC Online learning platform

If you have been out of study for a while, you can sign up to our Academic Writing Basics short course before your qualification begins.

UCSA offers advocacy, welfare and hardship grants

UC Online programme learners can access all of the UCSA Advocacy and Welfare services, with the caveat that some services require the student to come physically to certain facilities in Christchurch.

  • The UCSA Hardship Grant and Dr Mickle Fund Grant, as applications can be completed digitally/remotely.
  • Budget Planning Service.
  • Advocacy services, including assistance with appeals, complaints, Special Consideration, discipline, etc.
  • General support and referral to other UC student support services.

The UCSA Advocacy and Welfare team are always happy to speak with students over the phone or on Zoom, or communicate via email, to provide these support services.

UC Student support can help with wellbeing or accessibility services

Getting your head around university and learning new things can be challenging. It’s all about building on your skills, taking initiative and understanding what you need to do to succeed.

We encourage students to access the support that they need through the UC team, where appropriate, such as accessibility services, advocacy or wellbeing support.

Find services offered through UC and check out the essential student guides.

UC Online programme learners can access some UC Library services

UC Library is here to support your learning and research. Search and access the online resources, visit the Library in one of our three locations, and talk to expert staff about your study and research needs.

UC Online programme students can borrow a total of 50 items at the same time, with restrictions on some types of items.

The normal loan period per item is 28 days but this is subject to recall.

As most of our UC Online programme learners are learning from outside Christchurch, you are counted as a distance student, and can access distance services.

UC Online programme learners can access the UC RecCentre

Based in Canterbury? Access to the UC RecCentre is free for programme learners (once you have enrolled and paid your student services levy and fees). The RecCentre has a wide range of facilities and classes that are included in learner memberships – check out the virtual tour to see the spaces first hand!

There are also a range of remote services, including personal training sessions via video call and OnDemand content via the RecCentre Technogym app.

Pastoral Care Code and UC Student Code of Conduct

Tuihono UC is committed to supporting the wellbeing of our students, and we take practical steps to follow the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice (Pastoral Care Code).

As you're enrolled in a qualification awarded by UC, you are also covered by the UC Student Code of Conduct. This gives you guidance about your responsibilities as a learner as well as our responsibilities to support you in your learning.
