To ensure that our learners have the necessary background and experience to succeed, you must have completed one of the following:

  • At least five years of practical, professional, or scholarly work experience of an appropriate kind, and
  • Performed to an acceptable standard in any tests or interviews conducted by the MBA Director.

If English is your additional language, you are also required to meet UC's English language requirements.

Structure


The Postgraduate Certificate in Strategic Leadership can be studied part-time over 1.5 years (12.5 hours of study per week), subject to course availability. The programme must be completed within 3 years. 

Time commitment   
Unless otherwise stated, Tuihono UC | UC Online learners study across terms, rather than semesters. We have four terms per year (starting January, April, July and October) which consist of nine weeks of study (including a one-week study break), followed by a two-week period of marking and feedback.  
 
Part-time learners complete one 10-point course each term. This requires approximately 12.5 hours of study time per week. This includes taking in course material, reflection time and writing assignments. Our courses are flexible, enabling you to plan your study around your other commitments.

You’ll study six NZQF level 8 postgraduate courses for the Postgraduate Certificate in Strategic Leadership.

Leading Ourselves (MBAD615) | 10 points

Description 
This course enables you to identify and reflect on your leadership capabilities through self-assessment and reflection. You will develop the professional requirements to become an ethical leader. This paper supports you in recognising your personal leadership gaps and design your professional leadership development. During this course, you will examine yourself through self-assessment and analyse using key theories and cases related to the effective practice of ethical leadership. You will examine your current and previous workplace experiences and relationships to understand leadership behaviour in the context of the ‘real world’.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, it is expected that learners will be able to: 

  1. Understand role and purpose as the foundation of leadership. 
  2. Critically reflect on the leader’s mindset and its importance in leadership .
  3. Evaluate the importance of relationships and their contribution to wellbeing and effectiveness. 
  4. Analyse your strengths and weaknesses to increase engagement and wellbeing. 
  5. Critically reflect on the drivers of personal wellbeing and resilience .
  6. Develop specific strategies to achieve your personal leadership vision and values. 
  7. Examine and design specific strategies to practice self-responsibility and mindfulness for leadership effectiveness.  

Leading Others (MBAD642) | 10 points

Description 
This course will build your understanding of leading high performing teams and develop your mastery in adapting your leadership style to meet the needs of your team and organisation. This course will develop your skill in working with individuals, the team dynamic and achieving the team and organisation’s objectives. You will build your skills for agile and adaptive leadership that promotes effective performance. Finally, you will analyse your team's dynamic, understand the levers of influence and formulate strategies for effective conflict resolution, communication and team leadership. 

Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, it is expected that learners will be able to: 

  1. Demonstrate your understanding of power dynamics to positively influence teams.
  2. Analyse group dynamics and the process of team development.
  3. Apply the GRPI team-building model to intervene successfully to develop high-performing teams.
  4. Build self-awareness to effectively communicate with and motivate others
  5. Evaluate strategies to respond to team dynamics and processes. 

Leading Change and Decision Making (MBAD643) | 10 points

Description 
This course is designed to empower emerging and established leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the intricate relationship between strategic decision making and organisational change. Throughout this subject, you will explore how strategic decisions shape and drive organisational transformations, and how change influences decision-making processes. By examining the assumptions, limitations, and mental models that either enable or impede strategic decision making and change, you will develop a critical perspective and gain insights into overcoming barriers. 

Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, it is expected that learners will be able to: 

  1. Describe the relationship between strategic decision making and change.
  2. Explore assumptions, limitations, and mental models that either enable or create barriers to strategic decision making and change in organisations.
  3. Design leadership decisions and leading change using appropriate frameworks and processes.
  4. Develop a change strategy associated with strategic leadership decisions, using change management principles and ideas.  

Leading Strategy (MBAD631) | 10 points

Description 
This course will develop your skills in leading contemporary approaches to strategy development and analysis and formulation in complex business systems. You will develop the innovative practices of the organisation to respond to external challenges in a dynamic business environment. Adopting an ecosystems approach, this course focuses on building your skills to lead strategic development and identify competitive advantage for sustainable performance.

On completion of the course, it is expected that learners will be able to: 

  1. Evaluate strategic development for competitive advantage and survival in competitive and changing business environment.
  2. Analyse the requirements for building strategic competence and leading strategic projects in complex business environments.

Managing People and Performance (MBAD605) | 10 points

Description 
This course provides you with theoretical knowledge and practical application of organisational behaviour, leadership, and management, exploring and critically appraising effective leadership in varying organisational, cultural, and industry settings. This course will discuss and appraise the relationship between an organisation's culture, its leadership, and its employees and develop strategies for managing performance. This course aims to explore what may be expected of leaders in the joint pursuit of improved organisational and individual outcomes to ensure excellence in performance.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, it is expected that learners will be able to: 

  1. Examine the factors influencing leading people and performance to maintain the organisation’s human capital.
  2. Analyse organisational systems performance and  goals required to achieve the strategic direction of the organisation.  
  3. Evaluate effective leadership styles for leading people and performance in diverse organisational settings.
  4. Demonstrate and design appropriate strategies and inventions to lead people and performance in complex and diverse organisational settings. 

Leading Complex Systems (MBAD617) | 10 points

Description 
This course recognises that despite our complex, interdependent, and technologically sophisticated world today, important business and policy decisions are still often made with 17th Century linear and assumptions and approaches. Local and global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, peace, poverty, sustainability, and business resilience transcend any single science, discipline, agency or nation. They require a systemic view of social, cultural, economic, political, and scientific domains, and a new language and tool-set to achieve resilient outcomes. Leading in complex systems necessitates thinking that can grasp the bigger picture, including understanding the interrelationships and the full range of causal factors that underly them. This course calls for the synthesis of diverse knowledge and perspectives by engaging all stakeholders in a robust and unifying decision-making process – a process known as Systems Thinking. This comprehensive course will equip you with the essential skills to navigate complex systems and make informed decisions. The course empowers you to analyse intricate problems, recognise interconnections, anticipate unintended consequences, and foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders. Unlock the power of Systems Thinking, enabling you to become an effective leader capable of addressing the multifaceted challenges of our modern world. 4.    Develop systemic strategies, leverage points, and action plans for leading in complex organisational systems.

Programme Coordinator and MBA Director | University of Canterbury

Associate Professor Elsamari Botha is the MBA Director at the University of Canterbury, and teaches Digital Transformation and Technology Preparedness in the UC MBA programme. She is also an extraordinary associate professor at the University of Stellenbosch Business School, South Africa. She attained her PhD in Industrial Economics and Management at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. With 15 years of consulting experience, as well as starting an EdTech platform, Elsamari’s research focuses on the adoption and monetization of new technologies in organisations, online consumer behaviour, and digital strategy development.

What are the tuition fees?

The overall cost of tuition fees per 10 point course based on the 2024 Special Programme Fee schedule:

  • for domestic learners is $710* incl GST
  • for international learners is $3,250* plus GST if applicable.

Total programme investment for the 60 point programme based on the 2024 Special Programme Fee schedule: 

  • for domestic learners is $4,260* incl GST
  • for international learners is $19,500* plus GST if applicable.

*Please note that the fees are charged on a per year basis and the amount charged reflects the number of courses/points enrolled in the current year. These are based on the 2024 Special Programme Fee structure and subject to revision – you can learn more about the University of Canterbury’s Tuition fee structure here.

Student Services Levy costs
Each year university students around Aotearoa New Zealand are charged a Student Services Levy (SSL) in addition to their tuition fees. All the SSL money collected can only be used for the benefit of students - never for academic or administrative costs.

The SSL is automatically calculated on how many points you enrol in per academic year, capped at a maximum of 150 points. UC Online learners are charged a reduced SSL rate, which is 20% of the usual on-campus student levy. This is calculated as $1.83 per academic point in 2024. How long does an online Postgraduate Certificate in Strategic Leadership take to complete?

The programme can be completed in eight months when taking 2 courses per term (25 hours of study per week) or 1.5 years when taking 1 course per term (12 hours of study per week). If you need to take a break at any point, the programme must be completed within three years.

How do I apply?

Applications are made online through our Tuihono UC | UC Online website – view open enrolments and/or expressions of interest for when enrolments open. 

What happens after I apply?

If you are a domestic learner, the below process will apply. If you are an international learner, the application process is slightly different, and we recommend getting in touch with our enrolment team at info@uconline.ac.nz to answer any questions.

For domestic learners, your application will be assessed by our academic team to make sure you meet all entrance criteria (including academic and English language requirements). We may be in touch to ask you further questions about your experience, or to request additional supporting documentation. If your application is accepted, you will be sent an 'Offer of Place' to let you know your enrolment has been conditionally approved.

Following this, we will generate an ‘Enrolment Agreement’ outlining your courses, fees and student agreement, which you need to sign and accept. Your enrolment is only complete when the fees outlined in this agreement are paid in full (view payment options), at which point you’ll become ‘Fully Enrolled’ and receive a ‘Welcome to Tuihono UC | UC Online’ email with details of your next steps to start learning. What are the expectations for participation?
