Developed with input from Risk NZ and CGINZ, in this course you’ll learn the essential knowledge and practical insights to identify and manage risk in your organisation.
In this online course, you’ll learn to identify risk management principles, frameworks, and processes within the Aotearoa New Zealand regulatory context. You’ll look at what the standards are, and practise applying these through case studies and real-world scenarios. You'll also look at emerging trends and future considerations in risk management.

Our courses are flexible, enabling you to plan your study around your other commitments. You can choose to study when it suits you during the learning period (3 June – 3 August, with a one-week study break from 30 June – 6 July), followed by a 2-week review period for marking and feedback (4–17 August).
We recommend completing around 6 hours of study a week during the learning period (excluding the study break).
Module 1: Introduction to risk management
Learn how to identify risk management principles and standards, including where to find relevant national and international standards. Learn some of the common terms used in risk management.
Module 2: Risk management values and principles
Explore real-life scenarios to identify when and where risk management can add value to an organisation.
Module 3: Risk management framework
Understand and critically evaluate standard ISO 31000 and how it applies to your work context.
Module 4: The risk management process
Practise applying the risk management frameworks, principles and standards to real case studies and scenarios.
Assessments
Upon successful completion of the course you will be issued a digital badge to recognise your learning achievements. This can take up to 2 months to be delivered after the marking and feedback period.
Learner requirements for this course have been set to ensure learners can successfully undertake study at a post-graduate level. This course is equivalent to Level 8 post-graduate study therefore applicants must meet the entry criteria as approved by NZQA, and have:

Daniel’s research focuses on the use of interdisciplinary skills to improve value, adaptation, productivity, and management of civil infrastructure systems. His teaching is linked to infrastructure asset management, risk management, and construction engineering. Daniel is also the academic leader of the ENG ME! Peer mentoring program for all first-year faculty students. Daniel and his team have won multiple awards for their contribution to engineering education.
While having published and represented the university in several international journals and conferences, Daniel also works with local New Zealand contractors to optimise construction and maintenance processes. Internationally, Daniel consults with multiple groups including the World Bank, developing transportation asset management strategies for developing countries.
Responsible for risk and assurance for Gallagher, Rodney was awarded the 2024 Risk Professional of the Year for his leadership in risk management across Aotearoa New Zealand. Rodney is also a member of the Institute of Directors and on the board of the Institute of Internal Auditors NZ as well as Institute of Risk Management.
Rodney’s experience and expertise comes from working in senior leadership roles in risk management, quality assurance, quality improvement, evaluation, compliance, internal audit, and organisational strategy.
