Congratulations on taking the next step towards becoming a registered nurse prescriber! If you're interested in starting study in 2028, please sign up for enrolment updates.

When you apply for a programme with Tuihono UC | UC Online you're applying to learn online with Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury. As an online learner, you'll be part of the UC student community, with access to the same support and digital services, plus dedicated online support.

You're online, not alone. Our Enrolment Support Team is here to support your application, and once you begin studying our Learner Support Team is here to help you succeed.

Because of the clinical requirements to become a registered nurse prescriber, all PGDipNurs learners must go through a special application process outlined below.

What you need to prepare

Entry into the PGDipNurs is dependent on students having at least three years experience as a Registered Nurse in the area they intend to practice in as a Registered Nurse Prescriber. Your workplace must also be willing to support your practicum placement (which must be completed in order to apply for registration).

Before you apply, you'll need:

  • A current Registered Nurse practicing certificate from Te Kaunihere Tapuhi o Aotearoa | Nursing Council of New Zealand.
  • Verified evidence of your identity, such as a certified copy of your birth certificate, or a certified copy of the photo page in your passport. There are additional requirements depending on your visa status, or if you have legally changed your name — view full verification requirements.
  • Proof of any academic qualifications you have. This requires a transcript or your UC student ID number if you studied your undergraduate degree with us. If you graduated with a bachelor's degree from another university, you will need to request a digital copy of your transcript through them.
  • Proof of your professional work history, such as a CV or resume.

You must also complete and upload the form outlined below under 'Practicum placement requirements and form'.

Programme: during your application, you will be prompted to select a qualification to enrol into. Please select PGDipNurs — Postgraduate Diploma of Nursing (Registered Nurse Prescriber).

Courses: please contact studyhealth@canterbury.ac.nz to confirm which courses you should select during your application.

Our Enrolment Support Team can help answer any questions via enrolments@uconline.ac.nz or 03 369 0600.

Please note: a minimum number of learners is needed for effective interaction and feedback, while a maximum cap of learners ensures high quality learning and support. If the minimum number of enrolments required for a course isn’t met, or the maximum cap is exceeded, learners will be given the option to defer their study or receive a refund.

In order to meet Te Kaunihere Tapuhi o Aotearoa | Nursing Council of New Zealand requirements, practicum hours must be completed as part of this programme (via course NURS664 - RN Prescribing Practicum).

When you apply to enrol, you must also upload the following documentation:

  1. Additional Information Form

If you do not submit this document, your application to enrol cannot be accepted. This document confirms that your employer is willing to support your practicum placement (required as part of the degree and Registered Nurse Prescriber registration).

Specifically, your employer must agree to:

  • Provide and support a practicum placement, including clinical release to enable completion of 150 supernumerary hours of supervised clinical practice. During this placement the registered nurse will work towards managing complete patient/client encounters, including assessment and examination, development of targeted diagnostic testing plans, consideration of differential diagnoses, diagnostic reasoning, treatment planning (including prescribing where appropriate), referral to other services, and monitoring and evaluation of treatment outcomes.

  • Support mandatory attendance at the two-day study block for NURS664, which is in addition to the required practicum hours for this course, and six other in-person days required for HLTH662.

  • Provide a named Clinical Supervisor (a senior medical practitioner or nurse practitioner) who will provide both informal supervision (clinical oversight and support) and formal supervision (case reviews and teaching). The Clinical Supervisor will also review submitted assignments, participate in onsite/online oral examinations, and validate achievement of the Registered Nurse Prescribing competencies.

  • Ensure the practicum student has access to a medical practitioner or nurse practitioner during supervised clinical practice at all times (this oversight may be delegated to another suitably experienced medical practitioner or nurse practitioner).

  • Ensure the practicum student has access to appropriate clinical resources and is able to request investigations and diagnostic tests, with appropriate clinical oversight and sign-off processes in place.

  • Ensure the practicum student has appropriate access to read and document within clinical records, including medical notes where required.

Please note: Registered Nurse Prescribers are NOT authorised to diagnose and prescribe independently and must have access to a medical or nurse practitioner, at all times, to support decision making and/or there are clear escalation plans in place to maintain patient safety.
