Careers don’t always unfold the way we expect. Opportunity, timing and personal circumstances can take us in different directions — which is where returning to study part-time can help you refocus, build new skills, and open new opportunities.

Master of Strategic Communication graduate Neisha Livermore found that returning to study part-time helped her confidently step into a senior communications role in local government. In between her busy work schedule, Neisha shared her insights and highlights from completing her MStratCom.

What motivated you to return to study while working as a Marketing and Communications Manager?

My career had taken many different paths since completing a Master of Science at UC many years ago. Like many graduates, I headed to the UK, where I spent five years working in a variety of roles, primarily investment banking. After returning to New Zealand, I eventually found myself in a Marketing and Communications Manager position within the financial services sector. I especially enjoyed the communications side of the work, even though I didn’t have a formal qualification in the field.

I wanted to do something for myself, to deepen my knowledge, gain a recognised qualification, and open up new opportunities in communications. As a mum of two young children, working full-time, I was fortunate to have the support of my employer (and husband!), which allowed me to complete the Master of Strategic Communication part-time over two years. The flexibility of the programme made it possible to balance study, work, and family life.

What did you enjoy or find most valuable about the programme?

Returning to study after a long break was a challenge, but it didn’t take long to find my rhythm. One of the most valuable aspects was connecting with a diverse group of students, from postgraduates, international students, and early-career professionals to others like me, returning mid-career to enhance their skills.

The programme offered a great mix of theory and practical application, and I particularly appreciated the critical thinking and strategic lens it brought to communication. It helped me see the bigger picture and gave me tools I could immediately apply in my day-to-day work.

“It’s about expanding your thinking, building your confidence, and connecting with others.” - Neisha Livermore

How did you balance work and study, and was there support along the way?

Balancing full-time work, study, and family life was no small feat, but it was manageable with good planning and support. I carved out dedicated study time in the evenings and weekends, and my family was incredibly supportive throughout.

UC was also very understanding of the demands on working professionals. My lecturers were approachable and flexible, and the online resources made it easier to stay on track. Having classmates who were also juggling similar commitments created a sense of camaraderie and we supported each other and celebrated the wins together.

In what ways has the programme shaped your career, or how you approach your current role?

The programme gave me the confidence and credibility to move more intentionally into the communications space. It sharpened my strategic thinking and deepened my understanding of how communication can influence and drive organisational outcomes.

Since completing the degree, I’ve moved into a Senior Communications Adviser role in local government, a sector where clear, transparent, and inclusive communication is vital. The skills and insights I have gained have been invaluable in shaping my approach to community engagement, media liaison, crisis and strategic communication planning. In particular, the skills I learned and developed in survey design, quantitative and thematic analysis for my dissertation research have been especially valuable in my public consultation work.

What would you say to other comms professionals considering returning to study?

Do it! It’s an investment in yourself and your future. The Master of Strategic Communication isn’t just about gaining a great qualification, it’s about expanding your thinking, building your confidence, and connecting with others in the communications field.

Returning to study mid-career can feel daunting, but I found the programme is also designed with working professionals in mind. If you’re passionate about communication and engagement and want to take your career to the next level, this is a fantastic way to do it.
