Depending on what you're studying with us, you may be able to credit your online micro-credential or programme courses towards a further qualification. For example, you can apply to credit your completed online Certificate in Criminal Justice courses towards our on-campus Bachelor of Criminal Justice.*

If you're a domestic learner enrolled in a micro-credential course you need to provide a verified copy of ONE of your identity documents:

• New Zealand passport – can be expired but not cancelled
• New Zealand birth certificate
• New Zealand certificate of citizenship
• Passport with current New Zealand residence-class visa
• Passport and letter or email confirming your current New Zealand residence-class visa
• Certificate of Identity from Immigration New Zealand– if you're a refugee
• Australian passport– current
  
  

How do I get a verified copy?

1. Photocopy your original identity document.
2. Take your original document and the photocopy to a person authorised by New Zealand law to certify documents – for example a Justice of the Peace, lawyer, or court official (Court Registrar or Deputy Registrar)
3. Get the authorised person to sign each photocopied page. Make sure their name and title is clearly visible below their signature.

What if I can't prove my domestic identity?

If we don’t receive a verified copy of your domestic identity before you complete 30% of your course, we’ll need to put a hold on your account until you decide how you want to progress. At this point, these will be your options:

• Pay an additional fee to continue in the course as a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) learner
• Defer enrolment to the next available course date while you arrange a verified copy of your identity

 If you have a problem or concern about your learning, the best thing is to contact first your course facilitator or our Tuihono UC Learner support team. We follow the UC Student Complaints Procedures, so you should read these and then follow the steps outlined in those procedures. Yes  – you will need to meet the graduation requirements for University of Canterbury (see https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/study/study-support-info/study-topics/graduation). All our programmes are fully accredited and endorsed by UC so your programme has the same status as an in-person programme.

You can withdraw and get a full refund if you notify us up until the 13th day of each course in the programme. The last date to withdraw from a programme is the 7th Sunday after the start date of each course in the programme. 

The cost of Tuihono UC programmes such as the Master of Organisational Psychology will include a student services fee component. This is in addition to the tuition fee per course. If you are studying an online professional development short course or micro-credential, you do not have to pay this fee. 

Each year university students around Aotearoa New Zealand are charged student services fees in addition to their tuition fees. All the fee money collected can only be used for the benefit of students - never for academic or administrative costs.

The amount of the fee is automatically calculated on how many points you enrol in per academic year, capped at a maximum of 150 points. UC Online students are charged a reduced rate of 20%. You can learn more here: Student services levy | University of Canterbury

The total amount to pay will show on the invoice included with  your Enrolment Agreement.  All tuition fees, SSL, and any other costs listed on your invoice need to be paid before your enrolment is considered complete. SSL can be paid with Fees Free funding or a Studylink loan if you are eligible.

For our programmes, you may be eligible for StudyLink Loan for fees or FeesFree assistance - both of these options need to be arranged by you directly, via StudyLink or FeesFree.

Please check the information on each relevant programme page - some are only full-time, and some allow for part-time study.

Enrolments tend to open the month before a programme starts – please express your interest in the courses you are interested in, and we will notify you when enrolment opens.

• Your personal details (full name, date of birth etc.).
• Your contact details (address, phone number etc.) including an emergency contact.
• NSN (National Student Number) where applicable.
• Proof of your academic history if you are using international qualifications to gain admission: where you studied, the qualification received and the year you completed the study (translated if not in English). Electronic copies will need to be verified prior to completing your enrolment.
• Proof of your English language proficiency if English is not your first language.
• Details of how you plan to pay for your studies. 

To study one of our Tuihono UC | UC Online programmes, international students will need to meet the University of Canterbury English language requirements.

If you've studied at a tertiary institution within the last five years, in some cases you can apply to have your credits transferred to your Tuihono UC | UC Online qualification - learn more about recognition of prior learning. Not sure if you'd be eligible? Get in touch with our team at info@uconline.ac.nz. 

If you are a domestic learner, the below process will apply. If you are an international learner, the application process is slightly different, and we recommend getting in touch with our enrolment team at info@uconline.ac.nz to answer any questions.

For domestic learners, your application will be assessed by our academic team to make sure you meet all entrance criteria (including academic and english language requirements). We may be in touch to ask you further questions about your experience, or to request additional supporting documentation. If your application is accepted, you will be sent an 'Offer of Place' to let you know your enrolment has been conditionally approved.

Following this, we will generate an ‘Enrolment Agreement’ outlining your courses, fees and student agreement, which you need to sign and accept. Your enrolment is only complete when the fees outlined in this agreement are paid in full (view payment options), at which point you’ll become ‘Fully Enrolled’ and receive a ‘Welcome to Tuihono UC | UC Online’ email with details of your next steps to start learning. If you have any questions during the enrolment process, please get in touch with our team via info@uconline.ac.nz.

Only some Tuihono UC | UC Online courses are eligible for Fees Free funding.

Fees are in New Zealand Dollars (NZD).

Your bank might charge currency transfer fees.

You can pay with your credit or debit card. We accept Visa and Mastercard, but not AMEX. 

For our programmes, you may be eligible for a StudyLink loan for fees or FeesFree assistance - both of these options need to be arranged by you directly, via StudyLink of FeesFree. Check eligibility at feesfree.govt.nz and StudyLink. 

Enrolment Agreements must be accepted in the myUCO portal by the official course start date to avoid a late enrolment fee of $150. More information can be found here.

Courses and micro-credentials

If you've enrolled in a course with learning of 20 hours or less, then you may be eligible for a refund within 3 days of the course starting. If you've enrolled in a course with learning of 50 hours or more, then you may be eligible for a refund up until 13th day of the course starting. 

After this date, refunds will be available if your circumstances are exceptional, for example if you've experienced a serious medical event.

The last date to withdraw from your course will have been posted to your course page. Please check the course announcement for Key Dates, or contact your Ākonga | Learner Advisor.

Programmes

You can withdraw and get a full refund if you notify us up until the 13th day of each course in the programme. The last date to withdraw from a programme is the 7th Sunday after the start date of each course in the programme.

2. Go to the withdrawal area.
3. Fill in the withdrawal form.

You cannot use a StudyLink student loan to pay your short course or micro-credential fees. 

You may be able to use a StudyLink student loan to pay for your programme fees and for course-related costs – this must be arranged by you directly with StudyLink. Check your eligibility with StudyLink. 

Each course has a code of four letters and three numbers. The letters show the subject, and the numbers show the level. When you sign up to Tuihono UC and enrol in a course, you will be able to set your own username and password.

You can use these to log into our online learning platform once you have completed the enrolment process and paid your fees.

If you still can't access your account, please contact support.

It depends on the course or programme, but generally you’ll need access to a computer and a reliable internet connection.

We use it to contact you about courses you’re taking and give you general updates about UC Online.

We also use it for our own records and reporting.

In some cases, we might need to report anonymised learner information to the New Zealand Government.

We take your privacy seriously and don't sell your information to any third parties.

We recommend a laptop or desktop computer and a reliable internet connection. For most courses, you'll need to download and populate assignments. These are usually available in Microsoft Word.

If a course or programme has a specific technology requirement, you'll find this under the Requirements tab of the course or programme page.

Your organisation can pay by credit card or via invoicing. Contact us directly to arrange invoicing via info@uconline.ac.nz.

Courses and micro-credentials

There are no formal restrictions for studying our short courses or micro-credentials, but we recommend an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of six or higher.

Programmes

To study one of our Tuihono UC | UC Online programmes, international students will need to meet the University of Canterbury English language requirements.

These vary depending on the course, micro-credential or programme. Check the relevant page. See also the Payments and Fees FAQ category for more answers. 

You're a domestic learner if:

• You're a citizen of Aotearoa New Zealand
• You hold a New Zealand residence class visa and live in New Zealand at the time of study
• You're a citizen of Australia, the Cook Islands, Niue, or Tokelau living in New Zealand

If you don't meet any of these criteria, you're an international learner.

Yes! Almost all of our courses and programmes are available to international students. The learning content is the same whether you’re studying in New Zealand or overseas.

It's as easy as one-two-three:

1. Once you've chosen a course, you'll need to sign up to Tuihono UC and complete the online enrolment process.
2. To complete your enrolment, you’ll need to accept the terms and conditions and pay your fees (or choose an option for payment such as StudyLink). You may also need to upload documents to prove eligibility for programmes - you can save your enrolment and return to complete it later. 
3. Once enrolment is complete online, you can access our Tuihono UC learning platform. 

You'll need to withdraw from your first course and enrol in a different one (or a future occurrence of the same course). See more information on how to withdraw from a course or programme in the "How do I withdraw from a course or programme" FAQ below.

Short courses and micro-credentials
If you need to withdraw from your course during the learning period, please contact us to discuss your options. Our Learner Experience Team will work with you to determine your best course of action. 

Programmes
To withdraw from a course during the learning period, you need to log into your account here and submit a Change of Enrolment. Please contact your Learner Advisor ahead of withdrawing, as there may be unintended impacts to your study progression that they can help you understand before making a final decision.

Tuihono UC points are compatible with wider UC courses and programmes, however crediting and acceptance must be confirmed by the relevant department for the programme you would like to transfer to, in line with regulations. See the Transfer of Credit area in the University of Canterbury website for more information. 

• Serious illness or accident
• Severe psychological impairment
• Bereavement
• Critical personal circumstances involving the health and wellbeing of a relative
• Sporting or cultural commitments where you're representing (or trying out for) New Zealand
• Service in the New Zealand Armed Forces
• Other exceptional circumstances beyond your control – for example a natural disaster, damage to significant property, or being the victim of a crime

The following circumstances do NOT count as exceptional

• Changes to your domestic or financial commitments
• Changes to your employment commitments
• Circumstances that arise after you finish your course
• Short-term impairment – for example missing two days of study because you're sick
• Circumstances that are more appropriately covered by provisions for Special Consideration in Final Examinations – for example short-term illness during exams
• Known impairment like chronic illness (medical or psychological), injury, or disability – this applies unless medical evidence confirms that, despite appropriate management, your condition has unexpectedly worsened
• Lack of awareness of withdrawal regulations and dates
• If you apply for a refund using the same or similar reasons you used previously – in this case we might decline your application on the grounds that the reason isn't unexpected
